Helpful Fire building techniques.

Firewood King Pro Fire building tips.

Build a big, hot and happy fire.

#1) Make sure your fire has oxygen.

Before you start your fire make sure to clean out your fireplace.  Excess ash in your fireplace will do nothing except block oxygen from reaching your fire.  Once your fireplace is cleaned out then place your firewood holder rack into the fireplace.  Using a firewood holder rack in your fireplace is crucial.  We need to get your firewood off the ground so that oxygen can more easily reach the fire.

Clean your fireplace and use a firewood holder rack.

#2) Kindling Is Key.

Over the past 20 years we've seen and heard just about everything.  The single most important tip we can provide to our customers is that "Kindling Is Key".  You can never have too much kindling when building a happy fire.  Walk around your lawn and collect as many small dry twigs as you can find.  Instead of throwing away all of the twigs out of your lawn start a twig pile that you can pull from.  Cut down larger branches in to small easy to manage pieces.

There is no such thing as too much kindling.

#3) Make a nice pile of kindling

We're off to an amazing start.  We have a clean fireplace and tons of kindling.  Start by placing a pile of fine small kindling twigs in the center of the wood rack.  Make sure to loosely pile up your kindling.  We need space between the twigs so that oxygen can reach the fire.

Make a nice loose pile of kindling.

#4) Let's build a log cabin

Now it's time to start building your log cabin.  We're going to do some Lincoln Log style stacking.  Grab your pieces of firewood and build a cabin around your pile of kindling.  Make sure to add a few kindling twigs between each rung of your cabin. We're going to build a criss crossed stack of wood stuffed with kindling.  The taller the cabin the bigger the fire.  Make sure to add some additional loose kindling twigs at the very top for a nice roof.

Criss cross your firewood pieces while stuffing kindling between them.

#5) Time to light the fire

The best way to make a fire is by using some sort of "fire-starter" product.  We highly recommend using our Pinion starter pucks or Fat Wood.  Using a fire-starter is a great way to build your fire up naturally.  Fire-starter products start your fire gradually.  Be patient.  The fire will grow at the perfect pace or rate.  Place your fire-starter under your firewood rack in dead center under your log cabin.  Light your fire-starter and walk away.  Give it some time to get going.

We highly recommend using a "Fire-Starter" product.

#6) Common mistakes

Gas fireplace starters can often cause issues for novice fire builders.  The most common mistake is that novice builders crank up the gas all the way.  They begin blasting the wood with gas.  In doing so, they are also sucking all of the oxygen out of the environment.  Those massive torches require lots of oxygen to burn so big.  If you are using a gas starter, please keep the flames very very low.  Gas starters work best when they're barely burning.  Another big mistake is using charcoal lighter fluid.  Lighter fluid creates a massive flame that consumes lots of oxygen while burning.  It's also dangerous and smell terrible.  Avoid using lighter fluid.

Never turn your gas starter all the way up, never use lighter fluid.
