Seasoned vs unseasoned firewood
There are a lot of misconceptions out there about seasoned firewood. The term seasoned can be misleading because it doesn't have a formal definition. How long is a "Season"? Is a season 4 months, 6 months, 8 months or a year? Seasons are different depending on where you live. Alaska and Oklahoma have very different seasons. When does "Seasoning" begin? Does seasoning start when the trees are cut down, logs blocked up or when the logs are split? Let's say for example that seasoned wood is 1 season old (4 months). You will get very different results depending on what season the wood is cut in. If the wood is cut during winter and delivered in the spring the wood will contain much more moisture than if the wood was cut in the summer and delivered in the fall. The summer season cooks the moisture out of the firewood much quicker than winter.
The term seasoned is vague and can be misleading.
Firewood Moisture Content
The term seasoned is vague and not clearly defined. The question customers are asking is "Will this firewood burn?" To be more specific customers need to ask the moisture content of the firewood they are buying. Getting the moisture content of the wood will give you a definitive answer. Moisture content above 20% would be considered unseasoned or green and could pose issues when burning. Anything below 20% would be considered seasoned or dry and should burn just fine.

What does seasoned firewood look like?
To the untrained eye all firewood sort of looks the same. As a general rule of thumb the uglier the firewood the more seasoned it is. Fresh cut green wood is beautiful. Green logs look very uniform and tidy. As the firewood ages where ever it is exposed to UV light will turn a darker or gray color. The bark will start to slip off seasoned firewood. You may see fungus growing on seasoned wood. It's not so much what does seasoned firewood look like but how much it weighs. Water is heavy and green wood contains more moisture than seasoned wood. Seasoned firewood moisture is lower and it weighs less. So if the wood feels light then it is more than likely seasoned. Remember always get the moisture content reading from your firewood guy before they deliver. At Firewood King Tulsa we sell: seasoned and dry wood. We also sell unseasoned firewood as well.
