Top 5 firewood choices in Tulsa
What type of firewood is best?
The negatives and positives about these firewood types.
Red Oak Firewood
Red oak wood is no doubt one of the best types of firewood you can buy anywhere in the USA and the world. Red oak has many benefits. Red oak is a dense tight straight grained hardwood. When burned red oak has a strong but wonderful aroma. Red oak is used to create authentic Texas style BBQ. Red oak burns bright and very hot. It puts out a bright flame which will light up any living room or outdoor living area. Red oak has some negatives too. Red oak can take a very long time to "season" or dry. Fresh cut red oak is very heavy because it holds a lot of water. Red oak could give you a back ache or flatten the tires on your truck. Fresh red oak has a very high moisture content and when green does not want to ignite.

Post Oak Firewood
Post Oak firewood is also an amazing firewood option. Post Oak firewood is highly sought after and coveted by those who live in areas where Post Oak trees are not common. We receive many calls from customers in Colorado requesting Post Oak for their chimneys and BBQ smoking restaurants. Post Oak is also used to create authentic Texas style BBQ. The pros pick Post Oak over Peach and Apple wood every time. Like Red Oak, Post Oak is also a very dense and heavy wood. Post Oak also holds a lot of moisture. It can be very challenging to get unseasoned green wet Post Oak to burn. Post Oak tree bark can vary quite a bit from tree to tree and can be difficult to identify properly. Notice the difference between the two photos. Post Oak is recommended for advanced firewood users.

Hickory Firewood
Hickory firewood is an excellent option for firewood. Hickory firewood is no doubt legendary. If you've ever eaten BBQ you have most certainly tasted the delicious flavor of Hickory smoked meats. Old school BBQ joints pick Hickory over Mesquite, Apple, Peach and Cherry wood. Hickory firewood burns hot. Hickory has a nutty or spice like aroma when burned. The smoke is strong but it smells very pleasant. Hickory has a crooked wavy stringy tight grain. Hickory trees are unusual in that the bark looks different on the trunk from the limbs. The trunk has a crusty cross hatch bark while the smaller limbs have smooth slick bark. Hickory is more likely to burn with moisture in it than Oak. Green firewood is not easy to ignite but Hickory is more likely to burn. Hickory is recommended for medium level firewood users.

Pecan is an excellent choice for firewood. Pecan firewood burns hot and bright. Pecan firewood will light up any winter evening and make a wonderful cozy fire. Pecan has a nutty unique aroma. Pecan smoke is very rich and has a strong sweet smell. Pecan wood has a twisted gnarled up and stringy knotted grain. It can be challenging to split pecan firewood. Pecan firewood is dense but no where near Oak. It does hold a lot of moisture but is more likely to catch fire when green compared to oaks. Ash Firewood
Ash firewood is one of the best types of firewood on earth. Ash firewood is not the choice of BBQ meat smoking pitmasters. Ash firewood has a very pleasant yet very neutral smell when burned. The smoke from Ash firewood is not tangy, sweet or very strong at all. I recommend Ash to anyone who is sensitive to smoke. If you're tired of your clothes and hair smelling like strong smoke or BBQ brisket then try Ash firewood. Ash burns very hot and will heat up any winter day or evening. Ash firewood is very flammable. Ash wood is unique in that it will burn without issue when fresh cut. It may be hard for some to believe but that is 100% true. An Ash tree can be cut down in the morning, split in the afternoon and burned in the evening. If you're new to fires or you've had issue with wood not burning in the past then Ash firewood is for you. We've been selling wood for 20 years in Tulsa and we do not receive any complaints about Ash wood. Ash is recommended for beginner level firewood users.
